About me

AN ENTIRE LIFE IN DANCE

Hello, I am Marta Bataller Leiva, artist, choreographer, agent and coach for professional and amateur artists.

When I was young, I often heard older people saying “a ver si te crees que vas a vivir del aire”, which translates as “Do you think you can live on air?” The true sense of the phrase being to live without having any money. This was something that I never fully understood, and perhaps this is why that expression stuck with me. Yes, that is what I would like I would think, taking the phrase literally, dreaming of dancing ‘in the air’, but I really saw it as an almost impossible goal to reach. I couldn’t imagine that someone would actually pay me to spin in the air, to flip, to do acrobatics… the things that I enjoyed the most.

Full of passion and motivation, I took rhythmic gymnastics classes from a very young age. Creating dances, choreographies and shows was something that always came naturally to me. By 1994, I formed part of the Spanish championship winning team for rhythmic gymnastics.

A few years later, I decided to undertake a deep inner journey to get to know myself better, while discovering much of the ancient Mediterranean world. Being a curious and adventurous person, I took my backpack and walked from Jaca (in Northern Spain) to Jerusalem (Israel). From January 2001 to November 2001 my feet took me to Southern France, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Palestine and Israel. I took me 10 months to arrive..

Feeling inspired from my trip, I found the motivation to envisage a clearer focus and purpose for what I was passionate about. This lead me to places such as Madrid, Paris, Canada and Las Vegas where I would complete my training as an artist and teacher of classical and contemporary dance, funk, modern jazz, aerial acrobatics and handstand with contortion.

Creativity, air, rhythm, movement…

This is how I have been able to unfold my skills as a dancer and aerialist, duo adagio and hand to hand. Working as a soloist and with a partner, and also as a leader of acrobatic groups, I’ve been part of TV shows, events and artistic shows around the world.

Has my childhood dream to ‘live on air’ come true?

Today, my dreams as an adult represent new pirouettes which I dance with the same excitement as when I was a child, and look forward to my career taking me to new heights.

I also dream of transforming my talent and stage experience into the knowledge, inspiration and discipline needed to train, both physically and mentally a new generation of artists, so that they can be successful on any stage.

SOCIAL PROJECTS

My Purpose: Art for everybody.

In my view, any of the visual art forms can be used to achieve goals well beyond their strict artistic objectives.

Every artist has the ability to achieve the goals which they set themselves, in my case through dance and circus. Artists can use their skills and culture to transform society on a global level, which in turn will generate creativity and strengthen the role of art in our society as an engine of inclusive, and sustainable development.

In this sense, I am open to holding dance and circus workshops internationally in places where artistic activity is still only available to minority sectors of society.

It is my way of giving back to society everything that it has given to me. I hope to use my art and culture, albeit on a small scale, as modest instruments of social intervention.

Any ideas you might have about a collaboration and are happy to suggest ideas for future projects.
